Abstract

|
Objectives: The miracle question is one of the most important therapeutic questions in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). The purpose of this study was to investigate the commonalities and differences between treatment contexts and among the ways the miracle question was used by three representative counselors.
Methods: The data of the study were extracted from three educational videotapes by Berg, de Shazer, and Dolan. This study followed the traditions of case studies in qualitative research.
Results: First, the miracle question was used not only to clarify the goals of the client but also to establish hopes and visions for a problem-free future. Second, the counselors showed a very respectful and fully focused attitude to their clients, effectively communicating with them, establishing cooperative relationships, and helping them imagine and describe what they wanted. Third, the counselors devoted themselves entirely to the process of asking the miracle question so that the clients could complete a detailed miracle picture.
Conclusions: A miracle question without careful oversight from a counselor could be a dangerous approach, in that it could inadvertently offer both hope and despair to the client.
